Gordon Reef, with its red and white lighthouse, is the eastern reference of Strait of Tiran. It is characterized by the presence of Louilla wreck, a Panamanian cargo ship that ran aground on the northern side of the reef in 1981, which in all these years has been slowly attacked by the force of the sea, leaving its battered hull still visible on the reef. This iron giant appears to those who sail in these parts like a ghost that resists events. With its history remaining on the surface of the water.
Near the lighthouse there are fixed anchorages sheltered from the wind which make this dive site quieter than the others in the strait.
There are three possible itineraries that can be done in this reef:
The first runs eastwards from the starting point, and then continues northwards on the eastern side of the site. In the middle of this you can observe a series of metal barrels, remains of the stranded cargo, concretized by underwater life and transformed into dens by groupers.
Corresponding to the barrels you can go back, or continue north to also undertake the second itinerary, which is in current (drift dive). Here you will come across a small sandy plateau characterized by the presence of slender garden eels that emerge from the sand like blades of grass.
The third itinerary instead it leads to the exploration of the plateau that extends towards the south and to exploring the "Shark pool" from above, a depression that appears like a submerged natural amphitheater.
Regardless of the itinerary chosen, Gordon Reef will not disappoint in terms of possible encounters. From the very little ones nudibranchs that walk on the madrepores, to the sea eagles that swim near the eastern ciliate, to the reef sharks (with a little luck). Always in the company of the inevitable reef fish in search of food among the various species of coral.
