Description

An extremely varied underwater landscape and the abundance of fauna, both reef and pelagic, make Shark Reef the most famous and frequented diving site in the Red Sea. To enjoy the exceptional richness of wildlife in this place, the best time to visit is definitely summer, particularly the month of July. However, the site is subject to currents, sometimes even powerful ones, therefore an adequate technical level is required. The diving area is very vast, which is why there are numerous possible underwater routes that can be adjusted according to weather conditions, current, and the preparation of the group.

The most classic and complete itinerary allows you to visit not only Shark Reef but also Yolanda Reef and Anemone City, the two nearby sites, in a single dive. In this case, the dive begins at Anemone City, a plateau called this way because it is colonized by a large population of sea anemones.

Among the tentacles of these, the inevitable and symbiotic clownfish make the site even more colorful. From the anemone city, divers head towards the blue and with a few minutes of swimming arrive at Shark Reef with its unmistakable profile of gorgonians.

From here, divers continue keeping the coral tower on the right, but always casting an eye to the open sea where it's possible to see walls of Jacks, schools of batfish or small blackfin barracuda. Sometimes, in the circle created by these, one or two blacktip reef sharks prowl around, which will make the memory of this dive unforgettable. Continuing on, you reach a sandy saddle that announces the arrival at the third site: Yolanda Reef.
