RED SEA – NORTH AND WRECKS

Departing from Hurghada (or Sharm El-Sheikh), we set sail towards the islands and reefs north of Hurghada, embarking on an itinerary that is particularly suitable for divers who not only appreciate nature but also have a passion for history, and are thrilled when the two intertwine.

7 days of liveaboard life and dives suitable for everyone

The main feature of this itinerary is to explore a high number of wrecks during the dives, as this area of the Red Sea is truly rich in them. However, we will also explore the underwater habitat of Ras Mohammed National Park, unique in terms of the abundance of fish and corals.

One of the first dives is in search of dolphins at Sha’ab el Erg, a semi-circular reef where a dolphin colony resides. During this dive, it is also possible to encounter turtles and, during the spring season, the graceful manta rays, the reason why this dive site is also known as Manta Point.

At Sha’ab Abu Nuhas, on the other hand, there is a high concentration of wrecks to explore with scuba diving. Being located just a few miles off the route that ships take to cross the Gulf of Suez, this reef has always posed a threat to large vessels.

The reef plunges to a sandy seabed where three wrecks can be seen within a few hundred meters: the Carnatic, the Chrisoula K, and the Ghiannis Danae (better known as Dana). The latter two sank in the 1980s, but the Carnatic, one of the most famous wrecks in the Egyptian Red Sea, holds significant historical interest as it sank in 1869.

Onboard, we will share with you the story of the Carnatic and what happened during the rescue of those aboard this steamship. Another must-visit dive site along this route is Bluff Point, located on the eastern side of Gubal Seghira, one of the islands in the strait of Gubal.

It is a very interesting wall dive: coral formations, gorgonians, small caves, and madreporic architectures that create shelters for mysterious moray eels. But, casting a glance into the open sea, you can also have exciting encounters with tuna, jacks, whitetip reef sharks, and bottlenose dolphins. Turtles are also frequently encountered, especially during the breeding season when they crawl from the sea to the beach to lay their eggs.

Continuing north, we reach Sha’ab Ali. We are still in the Strait of Gubal, ready to be overwhelmed by the emotions that surround the most famous wreck of the Red Sea and one of the most renowned in the world: the Thistlegorm.

With at least two dives, we will tell you the story of this British-flagged ship that supplied the British Army during the North Africa campaign and was attacked by a group of German bombers, leading to its demise in October 1941.

But the sea does not embrace the sad chapters written by humans, and it seeks to repair its mistakes with an explosion of life. Among the wreckage of the Thistlegorm and its cargo of war material, schools of platax, barracudas, groupers, and trevallies will make this dive unforgettable.

The cruise also makes a stop at Ras Mohammed National Park, an extraordinary marine park rich in biodiversity and protected since 1983.

We will dive into the heart of this protected area to visit two famous sites: Shark Reef and Yolanda Reef.

Among the colorful gorgonian fans, enhanced by the water’s transparency, encounters with tuna, groupers, moray eels, Napoleon fish, turtles, and eagle rays are common throughout the year. But with a bit of luck, by looking further, you may also spot barracudas, gray sharks, and whitetip reef sharks.
